Zinc is a essential micronutrient, present in small amounts in the human body.

It is vital to the body’s health due to its critical roles in growth and development, bone metabolism, the central nervous system, immune function, and wound healing.

Zinc is particularly important for the skin. The skin contains a relatively high zinc content (about 5% of the body content), mainly associated within the epidermis (50-70 μg/g of dry weight). Due to its abundance in the epidermis, it is observed that a zinc deficiency results in rough skin and an impaired barrier function. The skin becomes increasingly dry. In addition, an alteration in wound healing is also correlated with this dietary deficiency.

The benefits of zinc for the skin, hair, and nails.

Zinc is a mineral that is particularly prevalent in skin and hair care products. Its concentration is restricted in Europe according to cosmetic regulations to 1% zinc in the final product.

What are the benefits of zinc for the skin?

When applied topically, zinc is a comprehensive anti-acne agent. This trace element possesses anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and healing properties that are highly beneficial for skin. Indeed, it inhibits the growth of the bacteria responsible for acne, Propionobacterium Acnes, which is the primary bacteria implicated in this skin condition. Moreover, zinc reduces the activity of the sebaceous glands due to its anti-androgenic activity. Thus, it helps regulate sebum production and thereby prevents blemishes.

Limiting itchiness. Zinc possesses soothing properties. It acts as a regulator of interleukin 1-alpha, a mediator of inflammation. Thus, it alleviates scalp and skin discomforts such as itching, tingling, tightness, and other unpleasant sensations.

The potential dangers and contraindications of zinc in cosmetics.

There are a vast number of zinc-derived ingredients used in skin and hair care. Among these, some are controversial, such as the following i-compounds.

  • The zinc oxide nanoparticlesUsed as UV filters in sun care products, the health risks are associated with percutaneous penetration, suspected reproductive toxicity, suspected genotoxicity, and a suspected carcinogenic effect. These nanoparticles are also potentially ecotoxic for aquatic environments. These compounds are part of our blacklist of ingredients, they are excluded from our products.
  • The zinc chloride and the zinc acetateThese compounds are used as antimicrobials, soothing agents, astringents, and oral hygiene agents. However, they are suspected endocrine disruptors. Additionally, they also poserisks to the environment:bioaccumulative substances, persistent substances, aquatic ecotoxicity.
  • The zinc PyrithioneThis active ingredient, known for its anti-dandruff, anti-seborrheic, hair conditioning, and preservative properties, is banned in Europe. It is a suspected mutagen and potential reproductive toxin.

We use the zinc-based compound called Zinc PCA. This active ingredient does not present any contraindications, nor health risks.

We use a plant-based zinc, derived from beetroot. It is then combined with L-PCA. The latter is a physiological vector, meaning it’s an active ingredient that aids in the absorption of zinc by skin cells.

Bisabolol is a natural ingredient found in various plants, such as chamomile and candeia. It is often used in the cosmetic industry due to its multiple benefits for the skin and hair. It was from the essential oil of Chamomilla recutita, or wild chamomile, that bisabolol was first isolated in 1951.

The bisabolol used in cosmetic care can be of plant or synthetic origin. In both cases, it retains all its properties.

Bisabolol is an extremely gentle ingredient that is wonderful on sensitive, irritated, or dry skin.

Benefits of Bisobolol to both the skin and hair:

  • Moisturizing : bisabolol acts as a humectant to retain water within the cells of the epidermis. It thus contributes to the maintenance of the skin barrier and to the prevention of dehydration fine lines.
  • Anti-inflammatory : bisabolol has the ability to inhibit the activity of COX-2, an inflammatory membrane protein that releases prostaglandins, as well as the action of certain pro-inflammatory cytokines. Therefore, bisabolol can be used to soothe skin or scalp itching or certain redness.
  • Antioxidant : Bisabolol protects the skin against free radicals, thereby assisting in slowing down skin aging. It also protects the hair from the appearance of split ends or breakage.
  • Healing : bisabolol promotes the activity of the fibroblast growth factor, the fibers responsible for the synthesis of collagen and elastin, which are essential for the formation of scar tissue. It also encourages the multiplication and migration of fibroblasts to the wound area.
  • Prevention of aging signs : bisabolol has the ability to inhibit collagenase, the enzyme responsible for breaking down the peptide bonds of collagen and its degradation. The action of bisabolol on collagenase helps to prevent this phenomenon and contributes to skin suppleness.
  • Antibacterial : Multiple sources have shown that bisabolol has an effect against certain resistant bacterial strains. This active ingredient can thus help regulate the bacterial populations living on our skin.
  • Bleaching : a study has highlighted the inhibitory effect of bisabolol on melanogenesis, making it an ally in the fight against pigmented spots.

Bisabolol: Are there dangers to be aware of?

To date, no side effects have been reported after using bisabolol for cosmetic purposes. This ingredient is considered safe and is not subject to a concentration limit by European cosmetic regulations. After hypoallergenic HRIPT (Human Repeat Insult Patch Test) tests, it was established that bisabolol was neither irritating, harmful, nor allergenic. Moreover, tests on guinea pigs have shown that this active ingredient was not photo-allergenic or photo-toxic. Finally, bisabolol is not among the ingredients advised against for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

First discovered in 1800, Allantoin is the active ingredient of Comfrey.  It can be of animal or synthetic origin.

Allantoin is found in many botanical extracts, particularly in the comfrey plant. It can be extracted from the leaves and roots of comfrey. Allantoin can also be found in mammalian amniotic fluid and in the mucus of snails.

(Thanks to Typology for this informative well written article: https://us.typology.com/library/allantoin-what-should-you-know-about-this-active-ingredient)

What are the benefits of allantoin?

Allantoin is a popular ingredient in skincare for its numerous benefits.

  • Allantoin and its healing properties. It is an active ingredient often known to boost the healing process. A 2010 study suggests that it plays a role in fibroblastic proliferation and the synthesis of macromolecules that make up the extracellular matrix.
  • Allantoin combats cellular aging. Allantoin has the ability to stimulate fibroblasts, cells responsible for the production of collagen. However, with age, the rate of collagen production decreases and tends to promote the appearance of wrinkles. Although this property is mentioned in scientific literature, its mechanism of action on fibroblasts is not detailed and remains unknown.
  • Allantoin promotes cellular regeneration. Thanks to its keratolytic action, it would help soften the horny layer of skin by promoting the removal of dead cells. Allantoin eliminates corneocytes by loosening the intercellular cement or desmosomes (protein bridges), which maintain the adhesion of corneocytes to each other. By removing dead cells on the surface of the epidermis, allantoin helps to reduce pore obstruction and eliminate dandruff.
  • Allantoin and its anti-inflammatory activity. In 2021, a study demonstrated that a fraction of snail mucus containing allantoin exhibited inhibitory activity against the thermal denaturation of human serum albumin, an anti-inflammatory compound. This property could be beneficial in reducing inflammation caused by acne or an irritated scalp. However, additional research is needed to substantiate this anti-inflammatory activity.
  • The effect of allantoin on sebum. Acne is often caused by an overproduction of sebum or the production of excessively thick sebum. Studies suggest that allantoin is capable of eliminating excess sebum. This property would be beneficial for acne-prone skin, but also for oily hair, which tends to produce more sebum (hyperseborrhea).
  • Allantoin is moisturizing. Several studies have mentioned that allantoin possesses moisturizing properties, although its mode of action is not detailed. Its hydrating potential could be explained as it is a water-soluble humectant ingredient that helps increase the water content of cells by combating transepidermal water loss in the dermis. This property is beneficial in addressing skin and hair dehydration by creating a protective layer around the cuticle.

Dangers or contraindications of allantoin in skincare:

Allantoin is considered safe for skin care. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has listed allantoin as an effective and safe agent for skin protection. In Europe, this active ingredient is not regulated for its use in cosmetic care. It is non-toxic, non-allergenic, and non-irritating. As it regenerates skin tissues following injuries or lesions, hydrates the skin, and soothes irritations and itching associated with skin inflammation, allantoin is suitable for all skin types, even delicate and reactive skin.

Allantoin typically does not cause adverse effects when used according to the instructions on the label.  As a precaution, it is recommended to perform a skin test in the crook of the arm to observe if a potential allergic reaction occurs. It is advisable to stop using a skincare product if one or more of the following reactions occur: inflammation, redness or discoloration of the skin, dryness, itching, or hives.
